How Intralinks scores

Our rating weighs five pillars, from security to support, and turns them into a score out of 5. Intralinks scores 4.4, which places it #6 of 16 in the directory. The card below sets each pillar against the average of every provider we track, so you can see whether the score comes from broad consistency or from one standout area. Its clearest lead over the field is deal features.

Feature coverage against the field

We record the same twelve features for every provider. Intralinks offers 8 of them. A missing feature only matters if your process needs it, so the chart separates gaps that are common in the market from gaps most providers share. The first card holds features that half the field or fewer offer, which is where a shortlist usually splits.

Certifications and controls below are as recorded in our provider facts. A certification name on its own does not tell you its scope, so ask for the report or certificate and read which systems it covers. Anything we do not track, such as hosting regions or key management, is listed as a question to put to Intralinks directly.

What Intralinks could cost

Intralinks prices on request, so there is no list figure to multiply. The estimator shows the range that project quotes typically fall into for a room of the size you set, clearly marked as a market estimate, next to the bands for published monthly and per-user plans.

Your room

Intralinks quotes per project; pages and term move the market estimate.

Intralinks at entry price Quote on request Priced per project after a scoping call Market estimate, not a Intralinks price: $5,000 to $15,000 for a project of this size, based on typical project quotes from $5,000 upward. No free trial · listed as price on request
Market band, monthly plans$900 to $2,400$150 to $400 a month
Market band, per-user plans$450 to $3,000$80 to $500 a month

Intralinks does not publish a price. Send the same brief (term, users, page count) to Intralinks and one provider with a published plan, then compare both against these bands.

Indicative USD figures, not quotes; taxes, storage limits and higher tiers can change the total. Market bands use the model on our pricing guide; confirm the final price with Intralinks.

Who Intralinks suits, and who should look elsewhere

These lists are generated from the scores and feature records above, so they apply the same tests to every provider in the directory. Use them as a quick filter, then confirm any deciding point with the vendor.

A good match if

  • Processes that depend on Q&A, granular permissions and deal tooling every day (deal features 1.0 above the directory average).
  • Deal teams that expect fast, hands-on help in the middle of a process (support 0.9 above the directory average).
  • Teams that sign everyone in through their corporate identity provider: only 6 of 16 providers in our directory offer single sign-on.
  • Teams that black out personal or commercial details inside the room: only 7 of 16 providers in our directory offer redaction.
  • Organizations that prefer a negotiated, scoped contract to a self-serve plan.

Look elsewhere if

  • Your process requires AI help to sort, summarize or search documents. Intralinks does not list AI features in our records; Datasite does. See Datasite.
  • Your process requires signatures collected without leaving the room. Intralinks does not list e-signature in our records; Ellty does. See Ellty.
  • Your process requires the room connected to your own systems through an API. Intralinks does not list an API in our records; iDeals does. See iDeals.
  • You want hands-on time before talking to sales. Intralinks has no free trial in our records, so ask for a demo that follows your own script.
  • You need a published price for internal approval. Intralinks prices on request; 6 of 16 providers publish an entry price. See pricing models.

How it compares with its closest rivals

Closest does not mean highest rated. Datasite, Ansarada and SmartRoom are the providers whose feature sets, pillar scores and billing look most like Intralinks's, which makes them the natural names to price against. Where we have published a head-to-head page, the card links to it.

A platform shaped by its clients

Intralinks was founded in 1996 and is headquartered in the United States, which makes it one of the oldest names in the virtual data room category. Its clients have traditionally been banks, asset managers and large corporates, and the platform reflects their priorities: strict access control, certification and a predictable way of running a room that compliance teams already understand.

For a deal team, that means fewer arguments with internal security. For a first-time user on the other side of the table, it can mean a learning curve.

Security posture in detail

Intralinks holds both ISO 27001 and SOC 2. Users can sign in through single sign-on, and two-factor login is available for external parties. Inside the room, permissions are set per group and per document, dynamic watermarking stamps each page with the viewer’s identity, and document rights control limits what can be done with a file after it is opened. Built-in redaction means sensitive passages can be masked without exporting the file.

For institutions answering to a financial regulator, the audit trail is often the most valuable part. A complete log of who opened, printed or downloaded each file, and when, is the evidence a compliance officer needs if a leak is ever investigated.

Fit for cross-border and regulated deals

Intralinks is at home in processes where at least one party is regulated: a bank selling a loan portfolio, a fund disposing of a portfolio company with assets in several countries, or a listed company handling inside information. In those cases the requirement is rarely just “secure”; it is a specific set of controls that the institution’s own policies demand, and Intralinks has been meeting those lists for a long time.

Institutions also value continuity. A bank that has run many processes on the same platform has internal guides, trained staff and established approvals for it. Switching carries a hidden cost in retraining and re-approval, which is one reason long-established platforms keep their place on institutional panels.

Data residency

Intralinks is a cloud platform. When a room will hold personal or regulated data from several jurisdictions, ask where it will be hosted and how cross-border transfers are documented. In the United States, the SEC’s guidance on cybersecurity disclosure is one reason listed companies now ask these questions earlier.

What you give up

Ease of use and value are the softer scores in our model. The interface is built for repeat institutional users, and a target company’s finance team or a smaller bidder may need training. There is no free trial listed, pricing is by quote only, and the platform tends to be priced for institutional budgets rather than small transactions. We found no AI tools, API or built-in e-signature listed, and there is no dedicated mobile app.

For a large process run by an experienced adviser, these are minor. For a mid-sized company running its first sale, they add cost and friction.

Budgeting a quoted room

Because the price is not published, the useful work happens before signing. Ask for the quote in the currency you report in, the basis for any per-page, per-user or storage charges, and the monthly rate if the deal extends. Ask too how long the archive is retained after close and in what format it is delivered.

The archive question matters more for institutions than for most buyers. Regulated firms may need to retain deal records for years, and a complete export of documents, Q&A and the audit trail is often the only practical way to meet that obligation once the room closes. Our VDR pricing guide lists the line items to check on any quoted room.

Comparable platforms

Datasite is the closest like-for-like rival, and our Datasite vs Intralinks comparison covers them in detail. For institutions that want similar certification with stronger support scores, iDeals is worth a look. Sector context for regulated sellers is in our restructuring and bankruptcy guide.
