What is screenshot protection?

Definition

Screenshot protection: Measures that try to stop or deter users from capturing document pages with screenshot tools, such as blocking capture keys, blanking the viewer when it loses focus or overlaying traceable marks.

How it works in a data room

Browsers give web applications limited control over the operating system, so screenshot protection is a set of partial measures. The viewer may intercept the print screen key, hide the page when the window loses focus, disable copy and right-click, or show content only in a protected application on desktop or mobile, where capture can be blocked more reliably. Most providers combine these with dynamic watermarking, because a capture that does succeed will still show the viewer’s name across the page.

Why it matters in a deal

No software can stop someone pointing a phone at a monitor, and providers that claim complete screenshot blocking are overstating it. What protection achieves is friction and accountability: casual capturing becomes awkward, and the remaining risk is traceable. For most folders that is enough. For a handful of highly sensitive pages, fence view adds another layer. Ask each provider exactly which measures apply in browsers and which only in their apps.

Example

A private equity firm selling a consumer brand puts its customer acquisition cost analysis in a folder with screenshot protection and watermarks. A bidder analyst presses the capture key out of habit and gets a blank image, then notices his own email printed across the slide. He takes notes by hand instead. The private equity guide and our directory show which controls are common in sponsor-led sales.
