How it works in a data room
Modern platforms render in mobile browsers, and many also offer apps for iOS and Android. Users sign in with the same credentials and two-factor authentication, browse the index, read documents in a protected viewer, and answer or follow questions. Watermarks, download restrictions and session timeouts carry over to the small screen. Some providers let administrators block mobile devices entirely, limit offline access, or require that the app be used only on company-managed devices. Large spreadsheets and engineering drawings still read better on a laptop.
Why it matters in a deal
Deal leads, directors and investors spend much of their time away from a desk. Being able to check whether an answer has arrived, approve a document release or skim a summary on the way to a meeting keeps the process moving. Mobile access also raises risk: phones are easier to lose, and screenshots are hard to stop on some devices. The right balance depends on the sensitivity of the material, so look at whether controls can be tightened for mobile users. Our directory notes which providers ship mobile apps.
Example
A managing partner at a venture fund in Singapore reviews a startup’s room on her tablet during a flight connection. She reads the latest cap table in the secure viewer, follows two open questions, and receives an alert when the founder posts an updated customer list. The fund’s policy blocks downloads on mobile, so nothing is stored on the device.
